1973 Vintage Torspo Stick

In 1973, Tom Granelli–Newark Brewers GM, had a new stick company, Torspo, send him eight-dozen sticks to try out with the team. Jim Szymanski drove to the Newark Airport North Terminal to retrieve the sticks. Inadvertently, he noted to the Customs Agents these new sticks had a hollow shaft which made them stronger, though more flexible. That statement caused a delay as a drug sniffing German Shepard was brough in to inspect the cargo before it could be released. Lesson learned. This stick from that shipment, more than 50 years old, is still brand new – never used.

On a road trip to Valley Forge, PA, the Garden State Rockets PeeWee AA team bus stopped at the Philadelphia Museum of Art for a run up the steps. The Rockets bus driver had to talk his way out a ticket as he didn’t have a permit to park. So much for the City of Brotherly Love.

1984 Essex County Chiefs PeeWee AA Shootout

In 1984, the Essex County Chiefs PeeWee AA team participated in a Shootout with the Washington Junior Capitals, between periods of an Edmonton Oilers vs. Washington Capitals game on a Sunday afternoon in February at the Capital Centre in Landover, MD with a crowd of 15,000+ cheering them on. Mike Buteau and Brad Pearson were the Essex County players who participated. Jim Szymanski, team Trainer, was on the ice with the boys snapping photos with his Canon 35MM at three frames per second. Mike scored two goals (both glove side) and Brad stopped all three at the other end for the 2-0 win!
